I finally got around to checking out the site, Stuff White People Like, and I admit to being guilty as charged. At first I felt a bit embarrassed for being so obvious and cliche. Then I realized that the list wasn't so much about making fun of white people but rather, making fun of upper middle and solidly middle class white people. So what's a girl to do? Die of embarrassment and commit to changing my ways immediately or admit that yeah, this upper middle class white girl from Canada does all of the following and more, and y'know, LIKES it.
- Taking a Year Off -- Since it's a guarantee that I'm going to be laid off this summer, I've made a plan to take a year, or two off and go back to school.
- Sea Salt-- I dig sea salt and yes, when I moved from Medicine Hat, AB to Moose Jaw, SK, I did indeed take it with me. It's just so handy because not only does it flavour your food, it also works as a natural body scrub (just mix with a little olive oil) or scouring abrasive for cleaning sinks. Someone should write a book on the wonders of sea salt.
- Promising to Learn a New Language-- I've promised to learn latin, french and italian. Haven't really gotten anywhere with it but I swear, one day I will be fluent in French ;)
- Halloween-- pagan with gothic underpinnings; yup, I love me some Hallowe'en. Guilty!
- Pea Coats-- I fricken love pea coats especially in black and ivory. I have never been a fan of the classic trench. Pea coats are warm and have better structure and go everywhere.
- Appearing to Enjoy Classical Music-- how true but there is some classical music I do enjoy and am not just appearing to enjoy it.
- Facebook-- The best way to herd up all those stray friends and relatives. I'm not really into the social aspect of facebook but it's a good home base.
- Girls with Bangs -- guilty as charged. I'm the girl with long straight hair and bangs. What can I say? It's the most flattering style for me.
- Sweaters-- I fucking love sweaters. Cardigans and hoodies are my favourite. I mean, what Canadian doesn't love a good sweater?
- Grammar -- I even wrote a poem about grammar that's how much I love it :) For me personally, I get a twitch in my eye when I see "weather" instead of "whether" or when good folk spell ridiculous with an "e".
- Scarves-- I'm a Canadian woman with european ancestry. It would be weird not wearing scarves. To top it all off, I knit them as well. Lots of them! I like cashmere scarves, silk scarves, wool scarves...even Hermes scarves.
- New Balance Shoes-- yup because they aren't ugly, match my workout gear and don't cause my foot to roll to the outside. In fact, I'm wearing a pair right now.
- Free Healthcare -- I'm Canadian so yeah, big fan of free health care. Nothing like having major surgery and not having to pay a dime for it.
- Book Deals -- I would never turn down a book deal. Ever.
- Dinner Parties -- Civilized way to spend a really good time with friends and family. The more casual the better.
- T-Shirts-- I'm a threadless whore :) and I have t-shirts from the Gap and thinkgeek. Guilty guilty guilty. Gotta have 'em all.
- Hating Corporations -- but really...who doesn't? I don't even like Apple Inc. even though I buy their stuff. Steve Jobs is an ass.
- Modern Furniture-- well...depends on the style really. I loathe plastic furniture no matter how famous the designer or design house. I prefer Shaker furniture mixed with a modern aesthetic; does that count?
- Gentrification -- because living in the suburbs sucks.
- Standing Still at Concerts -- I had a long day and don't like to get up close and personal with strangers. In fact, fuck it, I really would rather sit down.
- Co-Ed Sports -- Softball + beer + men + women = always a good time. It's a tradition.
- Recycling -- because one would like to believe that it does make a difference...or it will...someday.
- Expensive Sandwiches-- well sandwiches are my favourite thing to eat and variety is the spice of life so really...guilty.
- Natural Medicine -- I study Ayurveda so okay, I like natural medicine.
- Japan-- just for the wabi sabi philosophy, tea ceremony and textiles, the rest is rather gaudy.
- Apologies -- Canadians apologize for everything and not so much out of guilt but because it's the quickest way we know to get on with what we're doing.
- Kitchen Gadgets-- I love KitchenAid Mixers and waffle irons and apple slicers. I love to cook and some gadgets are really fun to use.
- Dogs -- Who wouldn't want a dog or two? Dogs are the best, especially Siberian Huskies, Newfoundlanders, Labrador Retrievers, Malamutes and Chow Chows.
- Living by the Water -- "when I was a lad in a fishing town, m'old man said to me; son you can spend your life, your jolly life just sailing on the sea. You can search the world for pretty girls, til your eyes are weak and dim, but don't go searching for a mermaid son, if ya don't know how to swim."
- Vintage -- why the hell not? Vintage is fun.
- The Sunday New York Times -- Sunday is the best time to lay in bed and read newspapers and the Sunday New York Times, even if you're Canadian, is a great read.
- Public Radio -- great to listen to while knitting.
- Apple Products -- I love Apple Products; they just work. I don't like Steve Jobs though; he's an ass.
- Renovations -- they make one feel good plus when you get a opportunity to customize your space, it helps make it feel like home and that's a great feeling.
- Breakfast Places -- my friends and I like Smitty's or a place on Water Street called The Celtic Hearth. Breakfast places are awesome and a great way to hang out with your friends without the formality and stress. Also, it's almost a guarantee that you'll find what you like on the menu.
- The Daily Show/Colbert Report -- because they're funny.
- Architecture-- I like architecture both modern and old. What's wrong with that? Maybe if I lived in the woods, liking architecture would be a bit eccentric but I live in a city so buildings are a big part of the experience.
- Vegan/Vegetarianism -- I'm not a vegetarian but I enjoy making and eating vegetarian recipes; a nice break from meat eating. I like tofu.
- Snowboarding -- because it's fun.
- Not having a TV-- it will rot your brain. I still watch some TV but prefer to wait until my favourite shows come out on DVD. Televisions are handy for playing xbox. *nod nod*
- Manhattan (now Brooklyn too!)-- I hear there are a lot of yarn shops, coffee shops and even a chocolate convention in Manhattan. Who wouldn't at least want to visit? hmm?
- Wine -- I heart wine; red wine, white wine and even *gasp* roses.
- Microbreweries -- hilarious. I'm so guilty but the beer really is better. Truly.
- Writers Workshops -- can I substitute any workshop?
- Traveling-- It's true about travelling but to be honest, I'm not a fan of global travel. I really prefer just to travel around my own country with few exceptions such as New York, France, Norway, England.
- Awareness -- guilty.
- Yoga-- I study yoga as well as ayurveda but I swear I'm nothing like the modern "yoginis". It's not a lifestyle for me. Knitting is much more fun.
- Tea-- english breakfast preferably; milk and sugar.
- Non-Profit Organizations -- guilty. I have a few I support without fail.
- Organic Food-- yup I prefer organic thankyouverymuch.
- Farmer’s Markets -- they're awesome! who doesn't love a Farmer's Market?!
- Assists -- this one is true as well. I prefer to be the brains behind the beauty so to speak. The assistant not the boss. In fact, I'm sure being a personal assistant would be my true calling in life.
- Film Festivals-- I don't like attending festivals but I enjoy themed movie nights or working my way through movie lists like that from AFI or Roger Ebert.
- Religions their parents don’t belong to -- I'm pagan and my parents are Christians so I guess I do.
- Coffee-- *lol* I live in a state of perpetual over-caffeinated bliss. I drink 10 cups of coffee a day. Wow; how true, plus my coffee is organic and free trade.
